In 1970, Brook Benton recorded one of the most atmospheric and enduring songs of his career.
His single, "Rainy Night in Georgia," climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the standout soul hits of the decade.

"I knew about rainy nights in Georgia. When I got out of high school, I went down to Marietta, Georgia to live with my sister and get a job," White said in a 2013 interview. "I got a job driving a truck for the highway. Then every time it would rain, I would get to stay home and play my guitar. So I remembered them rainy days and rainy nights down there." he said.
By the time the song reached the top of the charts, Benton was already a well-established figure in American music. During the late 1950s and early 1960s he had scored several major hits, including, "It’s Just a Matter of Time," and "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)," the latter of which he recorded with Dinah Washington.
But "Rainy Night in Georgia" proved that Benton's voice still had the power to stop listeners in their tracks. Its slow-burning groove and evocative storytelling helped the song become one of the defining soul ballads of the era.
