Fans of the always evolving '90s supergroup Mr. Bungle got a huge surprise during one of the band's recent performances.

As ThePRP reported, the group — led by frontman Mike Patton — played their 1999 song “Retrovertigo” for the first time in over 25 years during a performance at Teatro Estudio Cavaret in Zapopan, Mexico, on Jan. 15. This was an especially big deal for audience members since the experimental metal act has mostly avoided songs from their final studio album, California, since reuniting in 2019.

Commenters on a YouTube clip from the show couldn't get over seeing "Retrovertigo" back on Mr. Bungle's setlist.

"Great song!" one person wrote, adding, "Wish they played pink cigarette too. Great stuff wish I was there,"

"I was there and I cried," a second fan admitted, with a third raving, "The whole crowd singing at the end is f—king beautiful!"

"Instant goosebumps," declared someone else.

A review on Mxdwn.com called the performance of “Retrovertigo” a "genuine time capsule," noting that the "warped art-rock piece" "stood out to the material surrounding it, making its inclusion all the more dramatic."

Avenged Sevenfold covered 'Retrovertigo' in 2016

Maybe Mr. Bungle was inspired to perform "Retrovertigo" because they're currently opening for Avenged Sevenfold, who actually covered the song on the deluxe edition of their 2016 album The Stage.

In a 2020 interview with Metal Hammer, Patton said Mr. Bungle wanted to have the "most f—ked up reunion thing ever," adding, "and I think that's how it panned out."

“Because we’re not playing the hits, we’re not playing anything that people know," he explained. "First it was a joke, and all of a sudden…it was happening!”

While the band wasn't "getting on at all" when they split up, time put things into perspective, Patton explained.

"You get older, and you bump into each other, and you reconnect, and slowly all those old problems don’t seem to matter so much," he said.

One thing's for sure: You never know what Mr. Bungle is going to do next.
