Eric Stonestreet, best known for Modern Family, recently spoke to People about how he keeps his type 2 diabetes under control. He was diagnosed with the condition in 2009.

The disorder can cause high blood sugar if left untreated and can affect the heart, eyes, kidneys, and nervous system, among other organs. However, a consistent diet and regular exercise can help when paired with necessary medication.

Speaking of his battle so far, Stonestreet, 54, told the outlet, “I just decided, thanks to some good doctors and getting older, that I needed to take my type two diabetes seriously. And that has been a blessing.”

Portion control, which means having food in smaller portions, has helped the actor without stopping him from consuming what he loves and craves.

According to Stonestreet, all it takes is “knowing how many French fries I can have, how big of an ice cream cone I can have that doesn’t take my sugars to another level.”

His method of keeping his blood sugar levels on track is pretty straightforward: “Figure out what your numbers are and need to be after you eat. And then it tells you what you can eat and what you can’t eat. And then stick to that.”

In May 2025, Stonestreet told People that Mounjaro, a once-weekly prescription injection approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, often resulting in significant weight loss as a side effect.

“[Mounjaro is] a game changer… It’s changed my lifestyle, changed my approach to eating, changed my approach to exercise… Weight loss is also a byproduct of that… I’m just lighter on my feet. It feels good,” he noted.

Eric Stonestreet was once ashamed of talking about his type 2 diabetes. MEGA

Stonestreet hasn’t always been so candid about his condition. “I was embarrassed for many years about telling people because of the way I look. I always felt people would… think or say, ‘Well, of course you’re overweight. Duh, you have diabetes,'” he shared.

However, type 2 diabetes can be present even in the fittest-looking body. “It comes in many different shapes and packages. I happen to be one that stereotypically would have type 2 diabetes, and I just decided I’m going to change that script a little bit and do my darnedest to get my blood sugars under control,” he stated.

Now, he hopes to help people struggling with the disorder. “I’m doing great. And I hope I inspire people to get serious about their type two diabetes because it’s no joke,” he concluded.
