Johnny Whitaker at 66: Reflecting on Recovery, Tragedy, and New Life Projects
For millions of television viewers growing up in the late 1960s, Family Affair offered something comforting and familiar—a warm sitcom built around an unexpected family brought together after tragedy.
At the center of the series was Johnny Whitaker, the red-haired child actor who played Jody Davis opposite Anissa Jones’ Buffy, Kathy Garver's Cissy and Brian Keith’s Uncle Bill. Nearly 60 years after the show premiered, Whitaker is now reflecting on the extraordinary highs and painful lows that followed his years as one of television’s most recognizable child stars.
Now 66, Whitaker tells Woman's World that he’s approaching this chapter of his life with what he calls a “now or never” mindset.
“Well, I turned 65 last year… I’m now 66,” Whitaker said. “And I decided that I was going to throw out four Hail Mary passes.”
Those “passes” include several ambitious projects that combine nostalgia, recovery and personal purpose. One centers around cruises Whitaker organizes for fans, friends and family, where he also visits orphanages and performs as “Juanito El Bonito,” singing with children and handing out gifts.
Another project is a documentary about Portugal’s approach to drug policy, which Whitaker says connects directly to his own recovery journey.
“I’m a person in long-term recovery from all mind-altering substances,” he said. “I celebrated 28 years clean and sober.”
Whitaker is also working on a memoir and preparing for a new acting role in the upcoming film Skye Bleu.
“So that’s my today — four Hail Mary passes,” he explained. “I figure, hey, 66 years old, it’s now or never.”

Whitaker’s road to fame began almost accidentally after he filled in for another child during a church performance. A member of the congregation encouraged his mother to take him to an agent, and he landed a job almost immediately.
That early success eventually led to Family Affair, though Whitaker revealed the role originally looked very different. According to the actor, the series initially planned for Jody to be a 10-year-old boy before producers noticed how much Whitaker and co-star Anissa Jones resembled each other.
“When they saw Anissa and I looked like twins, they said, ‘We’re changing the script and it’s going to be twins,’” Whitaker recalled.
The actor went on to appear in several Disney films and later starred in Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, but behind the scenes his life grew increasingly complicated.
Whitaker spoke candidly about the emotional impact of Jones’ 1976 overdose death at just 18 years old, saying that in retrospect he wishes he had done more to help his former co-star.
“In retrospect, I realized that I could have been a better friend to Anissa,” he admitted. “I did not know what she was going through.”
Years later, Whitaker struggled with addiction himself after a series of personal traumas, including a divorce and the death of a girlfriend. He eventually entered recovery and says he has remained sober for nearly three decades.
Today, Whitaker says he focuses less on fame and more on gratitude, purpose and the people still around him.
“I am glad to have gone through what I have,” he said. “It’s still not easy today, but I am blessed to still be here.”
