Grace Gummer opened up about portraying Caroline Kennedy in the FX series Love Story, about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy

She also revealed how she'd react if executive producer Ryan Murphy created a show about her mother, actress Meryl Streep

Gummer has worked on several projects with Murphy, including American Horror Story

Grace Gummer is used to acting in high-profile projects, not being the subject of them.

The 39-year-old recently sat down with Elle for an interview about her role as Caroline Kennedy in the new limited series Love Story, which chronicles the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. (played by Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (Sarah Pidgeon).

“We knew people would like it, but we didn’t know it would be a global phenomenon,” Gummer explained. “We all have a group chat together, and we’re like, ‘Okay, what is going on?’”

The series, created by executive producer Ryan Murphy, has amassed many fans and critics alike.

Earlier this month, Jack Schlossberg, the nephew of JFK Jr. and the son of the real-life inspiration behind Gummer’s character, spoke out against the show during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning to discuss his congressional campaign. He also slammed Murphy for profiting off of his family's tragic history.

“If you want to know someone who’s never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy,” Jack, 33, said. "The guy knows nothing about what he’s talking about, and he’s making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else’s life."

His parents are prominent characters in the series, with Ben Shenkman playing his father Edwin Schlossberg, and Gummer as his mom Caroline, the level-headed big sister to JFK Jr.

"I would hope that Mr. Murphy would donate some of the millions of dollars of profits that he’s making to maybe some of the causes that John championed throughout his life,” Jack added. “Maybe he would donate some of that money to the JFK library to help keep President Kennedy’s memory alive, but he’s not. He’s making money. This is not a documentary."

In her interview with ELLE, Gummer revealed how she would feel if Murphy were to make a series about her mom, legendary actress Meryl Streep.

“I just don’t know if that would happen, right?!” Gummer said. “Because my upbringing was nowhere near public.”

“The thing about the Kennedys is there’s always been this lore about them, this mist in the American era that is so intriguing and will constantly be huge on the public stage,” she continued. “It always has been. People are always fascinated with them. And no one is immune to an ill-fated love story. I think we really, really need that right now.”

On March 6, actress Daryl Hannah criticized how she was portrayed in Love Story in a bombshell essay for The New York Times. Hannah (who is played by actress Dree Hemingway) had a long-term relationship with JFK Jr., before he ultimately married Carolyn.

“The character 'Daryl Hannah' portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John. The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue," Hannah wrote.

She continued, "I have long believed that engaging with distortion often amplifies it. But a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me. The choice to present her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate was no accident."

She listed inaccuracies in the show and said, "It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct — and they are false."
