Meghan Markle will reportedly headline a luxury girls’ weekend retreat in Australia, and some royal watchers and branding experts believe that the event looks more like a paid celebrity experience than anything related to royal duty. The retreat offers a chance for the Duchess of Sussex to speak directly to an audience that wants to hear from her. However, looking at the cost, critics wonder if this is about community or about selling access.
Expert calls Meghan Markle’s Australian retreat a ‘very expensive girls’ weekend’
Fox News reported that Meghan Markle will take part in a girls’ weekend retreat in Australia, hosted by the podcast “Her Best Life,” and led by Australian radio star “Jackie O” Henderson and Gemma O’Neill. The weekend promises a mix of conversation and downtime, with the marquee moment involving a gala dinner and an “in-person conversation” with Markle.
It sounds exciting, but the ticket prices have attracted a lot of attention. Fox News reported that the VIP access — including an ocean-view hotel room, a group photo with Markle, and a goodie bag — costs about $2,288, while Early Bird tickets run about $1,930.
O’Neill told Fox News she would interview Markle during the event and said the Duchess joined as a favor for a mutual friend. She added that Markle also “really loves what our community is about.”

Notably, not everyone sees it as a cash grab, with royal expert Ian Pelham Turner telling the outlet, “I feel this is a wonderful opportunity for the guests to meet a Royal with a genuine heart and for Meghan to relax and be with people who wish to listen to her thoughts on life.”
Meanwhile, Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR, said, “For someone who often talks about building, her record seems more in line with demolition.”
Kinsey Schofield, host of YouTube’s “Kinsey Schofield’s Unfiltered,” called Markle’s retreat appearance “essentially a very expensive girls’ weekend built around access to the former actress,” while Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, also criticized the optics.
