Meryl Streep candidly talked about the “beef” she had with Goldie Hawn back when the two were filming Robert Zemeckis’s 1992 dark comedy Death Becomes Her, which also stars Bruce Willis, during a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
Streep pointed out one specific habit of Hawn that the latter always got away with, thanks to her charm and beauty, leaving the former ticked off.
She revealed, “Goldie, she was always late to set. But she was so adorable. And I’m always on time, you know, and annoying.”

“But she’s late, and she had a red convertible, I remember, and she’d drive herself to set. So that was probably the problem… She had her hair all…’Oh gosh, sorry!’ And everybody thought, ‘Oh, she’s so cute.’ Yeah. So I had a beef with her,” she explained.

Despite their past rift, Streep and Hawn remain friends to this day. Expressing her affection toward her former costar, Streep said, “I loved her. I love her. She’s one of my buddies, and over the years, we’ve had some laughs about that movie because people love it. I thought it was like a documentary on Beverly Hills.”

Fortunately, Streep’s “beef” with Hawn never really came in the way of the fun the two had on set. “When we get to the scene, and we just do the scene all silly and fabulous, me with Goldie, we just laughed,” she said, adding, “We just had a lot of fun. And she’s the best laugher in America, really. She laughs like, ‘Ahahaha!’ And then they have to stop shooting. But that part was fun.”
Streep also spoke about working with Willis on the very same set. “Bruce was divine. I guess he was a bad boy on certain sets and came with a little reputation for being difficult, but we had so much fun with him. He was such a gent, and so game, and willing to be ridiculous. I just thought he was wonderful,” she noted.

Death Becomes Her follows two frenemies, actress Madeline (Streep) and novelist Helen (Hawn), who fight to win over plastic surgeon Ernest (Willis) after drinking a magic potion that gives them eternal youth and beauty.
When the two die fighting each other, they’re declared “undead,” as the potion also rendered them immortal. They’re ultimately forced to live with their decaying, distorted bodies. The film won an Oscar for its VFX in 1993.
