Michael Che is addressing Shane Gillisā divisive Saturday Night Live monologue.
The latter comedian came under fire for saying that women at the gym are ādressed like whoresā in a poorly-received joke from his monologue this past weekend.
Che insists that he wasnāt paying attention during the monologue, and hasnāt thought much about it āĀ despite the backlash.
Michael Che is wading into the Shane Gillis discourse, whether he likes it or not.
Gillis, who was previously fired from Saturday Night Liveover his past usage of slurs, came under fire again this weekend for a monologue joke referring to women as āwhoresā for wearing short shorts at the gym. The quip wasnāt well received by viewers, sparking online outrage and inspiring many celebrities to speak out against the comedian, including Schittās Creek star Dan Levy, Elizabeth Banks, and Martha Plimpton.
As for Che, the āWeekend Updateā anchor has been clear about the fact that he isnāt interested in weighing in on the drama. Still, in a Tuesday instagram post, Che acknowledged that he will inevitably be asked about the Gillis controversy, as he continued promoting his new special, Michael Che: Shot in Minnesota.
āI gotta do more press this week to promote the special. Wonder what every f---ing questionās gonna be about,ā Che wrote, adding an eye-rolling emoji. āThanks a lot Shane.ā
Indeed, Cheās nightmare came true during his Oct. 15 visit to Today, where he was directly asked about both the Instagram post and his reaction to Gillisā joke.

āOh no,ā Che said when his Instagram post appeared on the screen. Correspondent Laura Jarrett then asked the comedian for his thoughts on all the backlash.
āThatās comedy,ā Che said simply. āItās like, you think itās funny and some people donāt.ā
As for whether or not he laughed at the joke, Che claimed he wasnāt paying attention when Gillis delivered the provocative punchline.
āI was at cue cards actually, thinking about what I was gonna say that was gonna make people upset,ā Che said. āI didnāt even see it until the next day.ā
Asked what he thought about the joke when he eventually saw the monologue, Che paused before replying, āI didnāt think about it honestly.ā

Che went on to confirm that while some writers see the opening monologue in advance of the show, itās not always possible to keep track of every joke that the host plans to make.
āThereās so much going on. Itās really hard to see what everyone is doing, especially for me,ā he said, joking, āIām not what they call āgood at my job,ā so I donāt pay attention to that.ā
The conversation eventually turned to focus on Cheās bi-annual joke swap with Colin Jost, in which the punchlines are often racy, intense, and downright controversial.

āThatās why I canāt criticize anybody for swinging and missing because Iāve definitely swung and missed too,ā Che said. āI try to keep that heat off of me.ā
During the Oct. 10 episode, Gillis complained about women wearing āthose neon,ā āartificial bait-coloredā shorts where āthe wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole.ā
He told the audience, āI havenāt been to the gym in so long, I didnāt know women just dressed like whores now. Look, Iām sorry. Thereās no other way to describe ā have you seen it? Iāve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?ā

Critics called out the cringey moment while slamming the monologue overall, pointing to the crowdās lukewarm reaction. To make matters worse, Gillis ā who was hosting the show for the third time ā later dropped an F-bomb during a Green Eggs and Ham sketch, prompting another awkward moment. He later apologized for the mistake during his closing remarks, telling the studio audience, āSorry about earlier.ā
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for SNL and Gillis for comment about the monologue.
