EDMOND − Police have shared new details after a suspect was arrested in connection with a mass shooting at Arcadia Lake that left one person dead and 22 people injured.

Edmond Police Chief J.D. Younger said at a news conference on Wednesday that the suspect, identified in an affidavit for an arrest warrant as Jaylan A. Davis, 18, of Oklahoma City, turned himself in to the U.S. Marshals Service on Wednesday, May 6. He was then taken to the Edmond Police Department.

Davis' arrest came one day after 18-year-old Avianna Smith-Gray passed away on Tuesday, May 5, from injuries sustained in the Arcadia Lake shooting on Sunday night.

The Oklahoman, in many instances, will not name suspects until prosecutors file a case, but is doing so this time because of the notoriety and severity of the accusations.

His bond was set at $1 million initially on a complaint of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, but following the death of Smith-Gray Tuesday night, "that charge is in the process of being upgraded to felony murder," Younger said.

"To be clear, Mr. Davis' arrest is not the conclusion of the investigation. It is merely the most recent development," Younger said.

"Additional suspects remain at this time; however, we don't believe we have information to provide at this time that would increase the safety of the community or expedite the investigation or arrests," Younger said.

Fight between rival gangs sparked at lake party, police say

Police officers already were responding to a call received at 8:51 p.m. Sunday about loud music at Scissortail Campground when the shooting occurred, Younger said. Officials said calls of shots fired came in at 9:07 p.m. and the first officer arrived on scene at 9:11 p.m.

Younger said at the news conference that detectives believe the incident began with a fight between two females at the party. The disturbance "escalated into an altercation between rival gang members also attending the gathering," Younger said.

During the altercation, multiple people produced firearms and shot more than 80 rounds, which struck numerous individuals, Younger said.

At this time, officials have identified 23 victims with gunshot-related injuries, ranging from penetration wounds to shrapnel wounds, and six of those victims are juveniles as young as 15, Younger said.

Police found in a search of his house on May 4 ammunition that was the same brand as spent casings recovered from the crime scene, according to an affidavit. His mother said he had left Sunday to attend a party at Lake Hefner with two of his friends.

Davis has been in custody before, including after a gang-related drive-by shooting in Oklahoma City in 2023, court records show.

When asked about any ongoing threat to the public, Younger noted that "we're never going to stop bad things from happening, but we're gonna be able to prepare how we respond to respond to those in a positive and constructive way."

"I think what you've seen in the last 72 hours and what you'll see going forward is just that - committed people, serving the victims and those vulnerable to harm in a way that can make everybody proud and reinforce our trustworthy service," Younger said.
