Rumors swirl over possible SpaceX land deal in Pecan Island

PECAN ISLAND, La. (KLFY) — Rumors of a possible SpaceX land acquisition in Vermilion Parish are spreading quickly across Acadiana, but parish officials have not confirmed any such development.

Speculation has centered on Pecan Island, where some residents believe the company may be tied to a large-scale purchase of marshland south of Highway 82.

From hunting camps to lifelong residents, people across the region are discussing the possibility of a major land deal. While only about 100 people live in Pecan Island year-round, that number grows significantly during hunting season, when thousands visit the area. The uncertainty surrounding the rumor has prompted a range of reactions among residents and camp owners.

“You know what’s going on? We’ve been here on this for a month to month and a half now,” said Wayne Miller, a local resident of Pecan Island.

At this time, no official documents confirming a sale have surfaced publicly. However, several developments are fueling speculation. One key question involves land previously connected to a carbon capture project proposed by ExxonMobil in 2022. Some residents believe changes tied to that project may be contributing to the current rumors.

“We’re hearing Exxon’s pulling out and, you know, they want to sell it all, but, you know, all they’re selling it with, we don’t know. Everything is uncertain,” Miller said.

The rumored footprint is estimated at roughly 136,000 acres. If accurate, it would represent one of the largest private land acquisitions in the modern history of Vermilion Parish. Some locals said they have heard additional details about how the land could be used.

“The rumor we hear they want 500 acres for a pad. They want a 30,000-acre buffer. That’s pretty much everything on the south side here,” Miller said.

Residents familiar with the area say that industries such as hunting, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping—long central to life in Pecan Island—could be affected if a large-scale development were to move forward.

“And it will stop the hunting, crabbing, fishing, shrimping and everything that’s there,” Miller said.

The speculation has also been fueled by reports from multiple property owners who say they have received unsolicited offers from out-of-state investors at prices significantly above appraised value.

“Ten times is probably going to get a few people to leave. A lot of people probably won’t leave. This is, you know, they’re like born and raised here. I don’t know if ten times would buy me out. You know, if they’re going to buy you out, you know, or force you out,” Miller said.

While some residents worry that industrial development could permanently change the character of the marsh and surrounding communities, others see the potential for economic growth and job opportunities in the region.

“It would be nice if they would come and tell the people, you know, what is happening, what might happen, because a lot of people are uncertain on what’s going to happen with the island. If it comes in, is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing? Don’t know,” Miller said.

Although the situation remains unconfirmed, the speculation alone has drawn widespread attention across Acadiana. For now, residents of Pecan Island say they are waiting for clear answers about what the future may hold for their community.
