Welcome back to the *Survivor 50* Mystery Box. We’ve got more unaired footage from the game, behind-the-scenes photos, video from our cover shoot, interview outtakes, and a reaction from a *Survivor* champion naming a winner and loser of the week. Hope you dig the goodie bag (and here’s what you missed last week).

But first, my favorite shot from last week’s episode had nothing to do with Christian Hubicki pooping his pants, or Christian Hubicki fake-falling at Tribal Council, or Christian Hubicki freaking out after finding a Boomerang idol. Instead, it was this...

Shots like that just scream ADVENTURE and are why I love water challenges so much more than land battles. It also got me thinking about Fiji. I’ve gone on record numerous times saying I think the show lost something when it decided to stop moving locations every season (and then every *other* season). It gave every installment a different flavor, and sometimes even more than that.

Seasons like *Pearl Islands* and *China* even had the location bleed into the challenges with cultural impact influencing the competitions. And in a (new) era in which themes have been completely removed from the game and we only have numbers in titles, having the same backdrop every single season (for 18 seasons and counting) only serves to make all the installments kind of blend together and not have any distinguishable identity from all the others.

All that said, that shot of Savannah diving proved that if *Survivor* was going to permanently set-up shop in one location, Fiji is the perfect place to do it. Even though classic-era *Survivor* was usually by water, often that water was either not clear enough to get those gorgeous shots (like in Nicaragua) or was too shallow with too much coral (like in Samoa, where *Australian Survivor* now films) to do any real swimming or diving.

With the possible exception of Palau, Fiji is the best location *Survivor* has ever filmed in. And while it’s easy for us to complain about the show no longer moving around to different countries, to do so is to ignore the changing economics of network television.

This is no longer the pre-streaming era of 2005, when broadcast TV was king and three times as many people were sitting down at 8 p.m. to watch the show as they are today. It’s just not. And if the tax breaks the program has negotiated with the Fijian government — along with the savings of setting up its entire infrastructure in one location — help keep *Survivor* on the air with the sky-high production value the show continues to display on a weekly basis, then that is a trade-off well worth making, even if it may not be ideal for viewers.

And Fiji *is* that ideal location. And that one shot of Savannah diving proved it again. But while moving locations every year may be cost-prohibitive at this point, themes don’t cost anything! So hopefully producers can get creative and give us a little variety in that department at the very least.

You may remember the video at the top of our *Survivor 50* cover story with the entire cast lined up. We thought it would be fun to share a quick look at the players on the sandspit right before the shot, so here they are literally getting ready for their close-up!

Behind-the-scenes challenge instruction

After Jeff Probst explains an upcoming challenge to the tribes, he then walks each tribe one at a time through the course, explaining each stage and answering any questions players may have. The challenge team and a network standards and practices representative is there as well to make sure all teams get the exact same information.

I always love tagging along on these info sessions to snap a few pictures and give fans a look at the side of *Survivor* they never see — a side that shows the precision and care that goes into making sure the contestants fully understand each aspect of what they are about endure. Jeff is always super patient as he has to keep repeating the same shpiel over and over again for each tribe.

**Savannah on her relationship with 49 tribemate Rizo as she entered the game: **"I will say it could be anyone from season 49 and I would genuinely be happy to see a friendly face, just because I think that coming out here, we already have this target on our backs for being these uncertain players who no one knows anything about. No one knows how we gamed, and so I'm happy to see Rizo out here. That said, I am going to remember things that happened during 49, things that I've learned after 49 wrapped too, that are going to impact my gameplay for 50."
