The birds are chirping, the sun is shining and outdoor activities have returned.
If you want to get a taste of New Jersey, hit the road now through the fall and visit the amazing fruit farms at the Shore.
The Garden State has a host of strawberry, blueberry and peach U-pick farms, and picking your own fresh fruit is the perfect activity for the entire family.
The following farms can be found in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Due to weather, picking times and days can vary for all fruits; check online or call ahead before you step out for the day.
Strawberries
Strawberries are available for picking at Battleview Orchards this spring.
The best time of year to go strawberry picking in New Jersey is in May.
Battleview Orchards, Freehold Township
Battleview Orchards is a fourth-generation family farm that offers a variety of pick-your-own fruit options throughout the year, including strawberries, sour cherries, peaches, nectarines, apples and pumpkins.
Strawberry picking is cash only, with no pets, large bags or reusable food containers allowed on the farm. Admission includes a container to hold your berries; the cost will be credited toward your final purchase.
Pick-your-own peaches usually are available the first week of July through mid-August.
The farm also has a country store with operating hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays.

Hallock's U-Pick Farm, Plumsted
Hallock's, with 269 acres of preserved farmland, is a family-owned U-pick operation that started in the 1970s. The farm grows strawberries, peas, tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkins and more.
The farm usually is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. U-pick hours vary depending on the weather; check the farm's Facebook page to ensure the field is open before you go.

Blueberries
Emery's Farm in the New Egypt section of Plumsted comprises 60 acres, 20 of which are used to grow blueberries.
The best time of the year to pick blueberries in New Jersey is July.

Happy Day Farm, Manalapan
This family farm boasts 130 acres and grows eight different varieties of juicy blueberries on 10 of them. There are four clamshell sizes for picking: ½ pound, 1 pound, 3 pounds and 6 pounds.
Picking hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, with last entry at 4 p.m. Admission costs $5 per person (cash only), children 1 and younger are admitted free. Follow the farm's Facebook page for picking updates.

Champion U-Pick Blueberry Farm, Manchester
This family-run farm, which has no limit on how many blueberries can be picked, grows a less-common variety called the Elliot, with a unique color and tangy, sweet taste.
The farm is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, sometimes closing early for extreme weather or temperatures. Visitors should check the farm's Facebook page for updates.

Emery's Farm, Plumsted
Emery's 60-acre farm, with 20 acres dedicated solely to blueberries, is a preserved, family-run family.
Blueberry fields are open for U-pick from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, depending on the weather and the ripeness of the fruit. Available blueberry varieties include Duke, Blueray, Bluecrop and Chandler. Visitors should check Facebook for updates.

Peaches

The best time of the year to pick peaches in New Jersey is from July to mid-September.
Eastmont Orchards, Colts Neck
Eastmont Orchards is a family-owned and operated pick-your-own peach and apple orchard since 1923.
There are lots of varieties, depending on the month. In July, pick Glengold and Sentry peaches. In August, pick Cresthaven, Fantasia, Flavortop, Glohaven, Jerseyqueen, Lady Nancy, Loring, Raritan Rose, Redhaven, Sugar Giant, Summer Beauty and Sunglo. In September, pick Encore.
The orchard is open to pick-your-own beginning around mid-July. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Visitors should check the farm's Facebook page for updates.
